| Course Objectives: | The aim of this course is to introduce students to the structure and properties of the principal classes of engineering materials (metals, ceramics, polymers, and composites); to develop an understanding of how these materials are processed through fundamental manufacturing methods such as casting, forming, machining, joining, and additive manufacturing; and to build the ability to select an appropriate material–process combination for a given component in light of functional requirements, production volume, and cost constraints. |
| Course Content: | This course covers the fundamental classes of engineering materials and modern manufacturing methods. It addresses the structure of materials, their mechanical and physical properties, and the classification of metals, ceramics, polymers, and composites. The manufacturing topics include casting processes, bulk and sheet-metal forming, material-removal (machining) operations, joining and welding methods, and additive manufacturing (3D printing). The course also examines product attributes such as dimensional tolerances and surface quality, the assessment of process capabilities, and the technical and economic factors that influence the selection of an appropriate material–process combination for a given component. |
