Course Objectives and Content

Course Objectives: 1. Apply nursing care principles: by using problem-solving and critical thinking skills to assess and support the growth and developmental needs of infants, children, and adolescents under 18 years.

2. Integrate evidence-based knowledge: in the nursing process to identify normal and abnormal growth and developmental patterns, and to provide appropriate interventions.

3. Promote a safe and supportive care environment: for children and their families that reflects professional values, ethical principles, and cultural sensitivity during different developmental stages.

4. Collaborate with healthcare team members and families: to enhance communication, education, and advocacy in order to support the optimal growth and development of individuals under 18 years.


Course Content: 1. Fundamental concepts of pediatric nursing, family-centered care approach, and professional roles and responsibilities of the pediatric nurse.

2. Therapeutic communication principles with children and families, growth and physiologic assessment methods, and pediatric pain assessment tools.

3. Growth and developmental characteristics during the neonatal and infancy periods, including neurologic reflexes, cognitive development, and psychosocial development.

4. Infant nutrition, sleep patterns, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), and identification and nursing care of high-risk newborns.

5. Common neonatal disorders (e.g., RDS, NEC, ROP) and congenital anomalies, including nursing management.

6. Growth, development, behavioral characteristics, and injury prevention during the toddler and preschool periods.

7. Physical and psychosocial development during school-age and adolescence, including identity formation, risk behaviors, and mental health considerations.

8. Pediatric procedures, safe medication administration, and fundamental clinical practice principles.

9. Fluid and electrolyte balance, dehydration, edema, and shock management in children.

10. Pediatric musculoskeletal disorders and related nursing care.

11. Pediatric respiratory disorders and nursing interventions.

12. Pediatric cardiovascular and neurological disorders and nursing management.

13. Pediatric hematologic disorders and nursing care.

14. Pediatric genitourinary and gastrointestinal disorders and nursing management.

4) Students will be able to compare developmental theories (Piaget, Erikson, Freud, Kohlberg) and apply them to child and adolescent nursing.

5) Students will be able to evaluate growth, academic, and social development in school-age children and suggest health promotion strategies.
6) Students will be able to use developmental assessment tools (e.g., Denver II, ASQ) to identify delays and needs.
